This year’s Oscar season seems set to trample toes. We already have rumors about changes to how nominees receive their award and a puzzling lack of clarity around whether attendance is mandatory. Nor do we know why online options are not being made available.

So far, it seems the primary issue is a lack of clear communication. We have trades revealing ‘exclusive’ teases from ‘Oscar show producers’ that are rooted in more hope than fact, rumors that the show will copy the Grammys’ decision to ‘rotate’ audience based on category, and the only thing we know for definite is that nominees are still waiting for a definitive meeting on the topic.

We’re a month out, and rising health concerns are also causing some worries among potential attendees. With many more global attendees and nominees this year than usual, we’re seeing a lot of confusion. This is being exacerbated by the increasingly complex travel procedures needed to travel to the venue, with many nominees facing trips that must coordinate at least one round of quarantine and much testing to be allowed into the country. With this in mind, it seems odd that the Oscars appear to be insisting on an in-person pickup for the awards.

While this kind of confusion was probably to be expected under the exceptional circumstances of this year’s ceremony, it still can’t help but sour the way people are feeling towards the affair. Will it take the shine away? All we can do is wait and see.
