If there was one content producer that ruled the SAG awards, it would have to be Netflix. Managing to dominate half of the eight TV categories, across 3 shows, as well as net 3 out of 5 of the major movie categories, does this mean we can suspect a similar performance at the Academy Awards? BLAKE & WANG P.A Entertainment lawyer takes a closer look at this dazzling performance from the streaming giant.
Netflix’s award-winning lineup included The Queen’s Gambit, Ozark, and The Crown for TV series, and both Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and The Trial Of The Chicago 7 for movies. We saw Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman sweep away the lead acting slots, not entirely unexpectedly, while Outstanding Cast went to the Chicago 7. That’s no small feat, with that particular award occupying the same space as ‘Best Picture’ does for the Oscars.
It’s also, notably, a win in the same category that’s widely credited with propelling Parasite to its Oscar-night sweep, setting up a late surge of appreciation for the understated Korean masterpiece that would hit exactly the right note with Academy voters. While Netflix has so far played it cool on their well-earned bragging rights, there has to be some hope that that same magic could play out on their behalf, too. While some of the other precursor guild award shows (notably the WGA and PGA) have been a little disappointing for the streaming giant, this notable turnaround in luck for Chicago 7, particularly, could well re-energize their hopes and unseat current forerunner, Nomadland.
We’re certain that the fantastic award sweep has left the Netflix team thrilled. Will it be enough to unseat Aaron Sorkin’s film from its previous momentum? Only time will tell. As always, BLAKE & WANG P.A entertainment attorney will be there with the details you need.
