A Golden Globes Like No Other

Blake & Wang P.A.

Here at BLAKE & WANG P.A, we guess it’s only fitting that a year like no other for the film industry is followed by an awards season to match. From timetable disruptions to a field intriguingly empty of expected productions that failed to get greenlit under the coronavirus constrictions, this awards season will be one to remember. And not just for the startling cinematic treasures this more open playing field has unearthed!

While the awards season is already in full swing, we’ve seen many of the larger ceremonies tinker with their dates, and this year’s Golden Globes is no exception. Usually enthroned as the dominant ceremony for the end of January, this year it will be pushed back to the end of February. For the first time in its 78-year history, it will also be fully virtual. Co-hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who will not even be on the same coast, let alone in the same room, this in itself will be interesting to watch.

The voting process has been impacted by the global health crisis, too. The Golden Globes are voted by the HFPA, which comprises 89 international journalists. Most nominations and votes are being tallied this year through the use of special secured ‘viewing room’ apps, rather than in-person, another blazing new development. Without the ability to bounce ideas off of each other, however, or even just soak in the ‘buzz’ around pictures from one’s fellow professionals, we’ve seen some interesting and all-over-the-place nominations pop up throughout the award season. How this will affect the Oscar nominations down the line will be fascinating to watch.

The Golden Globes all-digital broadcast will be a fascinating one, and it will be intriguing to see how those working behind-the-scenes manage to bring some of the typical glitz-and-glamour of this prestigious award show to life without any kind of red carpet to do it with. All in all, we wish them good luck!
