Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards Honor a Tie

While not a shocker, it's still surprising to see a tie take Best Picture in any of the key award season ceremonies. It’s even nicer to see two worthy indie films take the honor. With Tárand Everything Everywhere All at Once splitting the difference to carry home the top award, it was a nice ending to the LAFC ceremony. Brandon Blake, entertainment attorney with Blake & Wang P.A, has the rest of the news.

Fourth in LAFC History

A tie for top spot has happened three times previously at the LAFC awards- most notably in 1975, its inaugural year, where One Flew Over Cuckoo’s Nest and Dog Day Afternoon took the award. We also have 1976’s Network and Rocky, and 2013’s Heat and Gravity.

What many interested parties will be focusing on, however, is the fact that the LAFC awards have a strong history of synching with the ultimate Best Picture winner for the following Oscars, especially in the 2010s. Think Moonlight, Spotlight, The Hurt Locker, and that notorious surprise, Parasite. However, it’s too early to start making strong predictions- they’re equally as known for voting out of the box, especially with their recent miss on Nomadland

More Indie Successes

Tárcarried its winning streak through Best Director and Performance, too, with Triangle of Sadness and Everything Everywhere All at Once making commendable showings as well. Interestingly, The Banshees of Inisherin, which has been heavily favored for Golden Globe nominations, only featured as runner-up for Best Screenplay.

It’s certainly proving to be an interesting awards season so far, and everything still seems open to chance regarding where the cards will fall in the Oscar nomination race. However, it’s certainly great to see indie pictures like Tár, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Triangle of Sadness, and The Banshees of Inisherin making such strong showings across differing awards ceremonies.
