The WGA And WME Reach Court This Week

What would the Festive Season be without another installment in the epic saga of the WGA’s dispute with agencies over packaging and packaging fees? This incredibly drawn-out battle with major agencies has won them some losses, but mostly victories, and it looks like they may be close to finally scoring one with the WME too. BLAKE & WANG P.A
Entertainment Attorney Los Angeles takes a look.

Attorneys for both parties appeared virtually in the federal court just last Friday. The WME has been searching for a preliminary injunction to end the WGA’s boycott of their agency. At least, that is, until the antitrust case scheduled for August 2021 can go ahead. The WME is the last of the major agencies to refuse to come on-board with the WGA’s demands, with CAA having come to an agreement with the WGA just last week.

It appears even the judges might be getting a little vexed with this ongoing dispute- possibly the longest of its kind in film history. Presiding Judge André Birotte Jr is reported to have encouraged both parties to settle before trial. It’s a rousing read, suggesting that both parties would do well to remember the people they represent. He lingers on the current global uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic, and also highlights that many writers (and agents) are being forced to ax long-term relationships based on trust at possibly the worst time for the industry ever while the 2 parties bicker.

While the matter has been taken under submission, it’s clear the judge is urging them to independently arbitrate a deal rather than continue with court action. Will the two Hollywood stalwarts break their deadlock and return to the negotiating table, or will we see them back in the courtroom soon? Only time will tell. BLAKE & WANG P.A will make sure you have all the facts at your fingertips regardless.
