Fremantle Introduces Native AI Project

While Hollywood has been rife with talk around AI’s storytelling potential, most of the mainstream uses of AI have settled on graphic effects and small-scale use across projects. Fremantle has, however, now launched a fully generative AI project of its own, and our Blake & Wang P.A. entertainment lawyer, Brandon Blake, has the full details to share.

Art Awakens in Edutainment

The project is a series of six short-form, educational TV shows that uses its entirely native AI production to take viewers inside the world of some of history’s most iconic paintings. It is being released under Freemantle’s shiny new AI production label, Imaginae Studios.

The series covers the famous Arnolfini Portrait, Whistler’s Mother, van Gogh’s Starry Night, The Scream, Nighthawks, and Hokusai’s The Great Wave.

Art and Emotion

Generative AI recreates each painting, then takes the viewer inside (literally) the world of the original artwork, letting viewers connect emotionally with the paintings while learning more about each masterpiece’s history and meaning.

Blake & Wang P.A. Reviews

The intent was not to just showcase the art, but also to show how generative AI can be used “with taste, craft, and cultural sensitivity, ” as CEO James Duffen noted.

The series has now launched on YouTube, as many short-form videos are choosing to, and will roll out further as the distribution details are hammered out. This is the first major release from the new standalone AI label for Fremantle, which has been keen to stress that it sees AI as an augmentation, not a replacement, for traditional production.

It’s a fascinating concept, and one that will hopefully showcase AI’s potential in entertainment as something more than a cost-cutting exercise for studios looking to tighten their balance sheets. This is certainly one to add to your “must-watch” list, especially if you are fascinated by the artistic masterpieces that eventually led us to the motion picture industry and its own artistic masterpieces.
