Streaming and the Emmys: A New Battle

Despite a strong presence within the Emmy nominations over the last few years, relatively few streamers have managed wins for their series. As we enter the next round of Emmy nominations, however, we’re seeing stronger streamer presence than ever before- and some massive pushes to have their content recognized. Entertainment attorney with Blake & Wang P.A, Brandon Blake, looks at who could be in with a strong chance this year.

Previous Winners

To date, Apple, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, and Netflix are the only streamers to score Emmy wins. Apple, in particular, has done particularly well with Ted Lasso, and Apple TV+ is the only service to have 2 Emmy wins under their belt. They enter this year’s Emmy race with a strong slate of contenders, too, across comedy, scripted variety, limited/anthology, and drama categories. They even have a strong reality contender in The Reluctant Traveler. Hulu also has plenty on offer, including those made in partnership with FX. Of particular note is the current series of The Handmaid’s Tale.

Netflix has a particularly strong slate to choose from this year, with Dahmer, The Crown, plenty of Bridgerton offerings and some high-performing docu-series content. We will be genuinely surprised if they don’t score at least one win again this year. Prime Video will no doubt be hoping the last season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel can repeat its first season win, and will be looking for nods to their Lord of the Rings prequel, too.

The Hopefuls

Topping the list of those yet to be recognized with an Emmy win has to be Disney+. Their Marvel and Star Wars spin-off series have already been nominated, performing well with audiences. With additional strong franchise series as well as American Born Chinese and a compelling drama, A Small Light (based on the Anne Frank story), this year they could be in luck.

Surprisingly, Amazon’s Freevee has Jury Duty on offer, generating tons of buzz. HBO, now Max, has some strong comedy contenders and true-crime offerings, but nothing particularly outstanding. Paramount+, Peacock, and Roku all have series in the running this year as well. Roku has less to choose from, but Weird should be in the running.

Will this be the year we see more streamers take home Emmy accolades? There’s certainly plenty of scope to choose from.
