Jurassic World Dominion’ Crosses $1B Globally

Despite a lukewarm start, Jurassic World: Dominion has now officially made it into the $1B territory at the global Box Office. While it was a slow burn to get there, this makes it one of only three post-pandemic films to meet this marker, and that’s worth celebrating. Brandon Blake, entertainment attorney at Blake & Wang P.A, has more from this exciting news.

No 2 Film for 2022

This also makes it the second-highest earning film of 2022, coming in behind the runaway success of Top Gun: Maverick. As of last week, the split lay at $376M domestic and $624M international. It’s the seventh title for Universal to pass $1B worldwide, as well as the third in the Jurassic Park franchise, which has a collective global box office of $6.02B.

Jurassic World: Dominion topped $500M within its opening two weeks, which also gave it a position as one of only 10 movies to hit that mark post-pandemic, six of which have been released this year. Likewise, by June, it had reached $600M globally, one of two in 2022 and five post-pandemic to meet that benchmark.

The Now-Elusive Chinese Release

Jurassic World: Dominion was lucky enough to receive a Chinese release, something that has been rare indeed in the post-pandemic landscape. Here it pulled in $158M and became the 3rd biggest Hollywood release of the COVID era there.

Universal has had a particularly good run in 2022, with other titles (Nope, Minions: The Rise of Gru, The Black Phone, and The Bad Guys) helping to boost it to over $3B before we even close the year, the only studio (so far) to manage this since 2019. With other key films from the studio still to release, 2022 is looking to be their year.

For the industry overall, it is fantastic to see another film cross benchmarks and make a major financial splash. Hopefully, there is more to come.
