Arthouse Breakout Crosses $103M Worldwide

Everything Everywhere All at Once has been a surprising money generator for A24, and now officially takes the title of their highest grossing movie ever. In an environment where naysayers still claim only tentpoles and blockbusters can make it, this is a victory for arthouse and indie movies everywhere. Entertainment lawyer Los Angeles with Blake & Wang P.A, Brandon Blake, examines the figures.

$70M Domestic

While the film crossed $100M globally a while ago, it has only recently hit the $70M takings at the domestic box office in its 27th week of release, across 28 locations. While the charming film is also clear awards season bait, we’re sure that A24 are pleased with the new record, officially $23M over their previous star, Hereditary. It also beats out their release, Uncut Gems, by $20M for a stateside record. It’s also widely credited as the reason Universal have pounced on the directing duet for a 5-year exclusive first-look deal, as we’ve covered before. It has yet to release for electronic sales, too.

Surprising Staying Power

Despite the domestic-heavy numbers, it has seen solid success in the UK, Australia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Germany, and Singapore too. It is scheduled for small releases in Latin America, Italy, France, Japan, and a few others still, which should top the numbers up as well.

But such strong staying power for an arthouse release in the US is nothing to ignore, particularly for one with a martial arts leaning. Despite the overall strong indicators of recovery in the wider theatrical market, there has been considerable concern that only ‘tentpoles’ and spectaculars can thrive. Yet the stellar performance of Everything Everywhere All at Once proves otherwise. Keeping solid foot traffic throughout its 12 weekend run, it’s been a nice little addition to the fall lineup as well as proof that strong indie and arthouse fair can pull numbers well worth having.
