Not Just A Box Office Hit

Of course, it’s easy to see why there has been the churning press attention on Spiderman’s Box Office performance. After all, it is a massive contributor to Sony Pictures mopping up 93% of movie tickets sold this weekend alone.

Yet Spiderman is leading the charge for them on VOD charts, too. We see it top out at the number 1 spot for Google Play and take second at iTunes. Interestingly, Venom: Let There Be Carnage took the leading spot at iTunes, helped by a price drop, and giving Sony a two-for-two there.

Unusually, Google Play was also accepting pre-buys for Spiderman: No Way Home, a set of presales that pushed the film to number 6 on Google’s chart, too.

Universal Coming In Close

The nearest competitor was Universal, with both The Grinch and How The Grinch Stole Christmas placing on all three charts, with The Grinch taking number 2 for Google Play. These Christmas classics were a Netflix exclusive last year, and have yet to be added to Peacock’s library, so it’s not all that surprising to see the sought-after where they were available.

Other than that, the charts show little to get excited about this week. No Time to Die and Free Guy continue to make the top-10 charts, a tenure both have held surprisingly long. We see other family-friendly fare, from Christmas-themed Elf to new entries for Clifford the Big Red Dog and Encanto dominate, alongside some more ‘grown-up’ fare.

While we always knew that Spiderman was destined to perform well, its meteoric rise to dominate the movie industry was less expected. Where to from here? Only the New Year can tell, but we will be watching with interest.
