The Little Spider That Could: Spiderman: No Way Home Becomes Sony’s Top-Grossing Film

As if the string of shattered Box Office records was not enough, Spiderman: No Way Home has also cemented itself as Sony’s highest-grossing film of all time. Here are the details from Brandon Blake, the entertainment attorney and industry expert at Blake & Wang P.A

Shattered Record

We actually predicted this possibility as early as last week, when Spiderman: No Way Home crossed the global $1B line, chasing close to the heels of previous record-holder Spider-Man: Far From Home’s $1.13B. To date, Spiderman: No Way Home now sits at $1.16B in global revenue earned. This breaks down into $516.4M domestic and $644.9M at the international box office. It’s worth noting that this is without a Chinese opening, too, typically the second-highest-grossing market after the U.S itself.

Nor is the hit film showing much sign of slowing down, with the $28.4M takings as of last Tuesday representing only a 5.6% drop from the $30.1M of the day before. With much of the workforce returning to work this week, it’s inevitable there will be some dip in the box office, but it’s certainly still a strong performer.

No 1 Movie of 2021 in Sight

Combined with the many box Office records smashed since its release, it’s now clear No Way Home will take the title as the best performer for 2021 overseas among Hollywood releases, as it has overtaken No Time To Die. 3 Chinese movies are standing between it and the overall No 1 title, and it will be interesting to see if it manages to topple them.

Perhaps more importantly, it took only 14 days to shoot past Far From Home’s 2019 takings- and without China, as we mentioned. Given that some markets locally and overseas also still have theatrical restrictions, it’s no mean feat. And the film will release in Japan for the first time this month, and still shows signs of significant traction globally.

Where to from here? For now, it looks like the answer is still up.
